Mulled Wine Recipe - Ex VitaeEver since my parents moved to Luxembourg, I’ve come home and enjoyed a very different Christmas experience. Christmas is a pretty big deal in Luxembourg. And it’s wonderful. The city puts on a lovely Christmas market in the Old Town, where you can buy roasted chestnuts and candy by the pound (yum). Everyone and their uncle comes out to the ville, and there are usually carolers singing Christmas tunes (in English!). It’s all very merry and bright, you know? However, my favorite Luxembourgish holiday tradition by far is glühwein, or German mulled wine. Glühwein is everywhere in this part of the world. Simmered with fruits and spices for about an hour, this beverage costs about 2 euros per small mug. Sure, it’s a little bit pricey, but it’s definitely worth it. Seriously, nothing beats a warm cup of mulled wine when it’s 30 degrees outside and you can’t feel your fingers. If you don’t feel like going out in search of the perfect cup of mulled wine (and who can blame you), I discovered the Luxembourgish mulled wine recipe to share with you! And just in time for the holiday, too. Glühwein is just about the perfect drink for Christmas Eve, as you’re cuddling up with your family around the fire (or youtube video of a fire, in my case).

Mulled Wine Recipe - Ex Vitae

MULLED WINE RECIPE (GLÜHWEIN)

INGREDIENTS:

2 cups of orange juice
2 bottles of a dry red wine
1/2 cup sugar, or more if desired
1 tsp grated nutmeg, preferably fresh
5 cinnamon sticks
2 tsp of ginger, powdered or fresh
10 cloves
2 sliced oranges with their peels still on.

Heat a large pot (stockpot is perfect) over medium heat. Add the orange juice and sugar, stirring until all the sugar has dissolved in the juice. Add the nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and cinnamon. Stir together, then add both bottles of wine. Heat the liquid until it starts to bubble, then add in the orange slices and set the heat to low. Allow the mixture to simmer to simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Makes 4 servings
