On Exploration

On Exploration

Full disclosure: I am not a very outgoing person. My idea of an idyllic Friday night involves sitting on my couch, under a blanket, enjoying some chocolate-covered almonds and watching 6 straight hours of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. One might say that I’m a big fan of peace and quiet. Maybe it’s a product of my 3 hour commute, but when I get home, I dig rest/relaxation and not having to talk to anyone about anything for at least a couple of hours.

So when S and I made a New Years resolution to do something interesting or fun every weekend of 2015, you can imagine my hesitation. For some reason, staying in and tooling around on the internet doesn’t really factor into my boyfriend’s idea of a “fun time”. He wants to explore, maybe walk across the Golden Gate Bridge or see a concert. I, on the other hand, would love to not get out of my PJs for an entire day. You can understand the difficulty.

But here’s the thing. I wasn’t always this way. There was a time (let’s call it “college”) when I actually enjoyed going outside of my apartment and experiencing what the world had to offer. I’m living in what is arguably the greatest city of all the cities in the world, and I’ve seen exactly none percent of it.

When I was a coxswain, my coach always used to tell me that the hardest part of any practice was that first step out the door. So here’s the plan: one adventurous thing, every weekend, no exceptions. We’re here, and we’re young, and there’s a whole city out there for us to explore – all we have to do (really, all have to do) is take that step.

So, here we go! So far, this little resolution has been fantastic. I’ve seen and experienced more in the past couple of weeks than in the few months that preceded them. I’m starting to feel more and more like myself again – adventurous, fun-seeking and always down for something new. Maybe the hardest part really was that first step; now that I’m here and forced to move out of my comfort zone on a weekly basis, I feel way happier and, oddly, more energized. And, I can’t wait to see what else this town of mine has in store.

What are you resolving this year? How are your resolutions going? Let me know in the comments – I’d love to hear what you guys are up to :)

It’s an absolute sin to live where you live and not get out and explore it more! I can understand the desire to stay in with PJs and the Internet, but I mean— you’re in the city. Get out and enjoy it. You’ll fall in love.

I know. I KNOW. that’s the whole motivation behind this pact – I was miserable that I was missing so much of this fabulous city. And, wouldn’t you know, it’s been an amazing time actually getting out there and EXPLORING, you know? AND, I keep hoping to run into you at some point. Maybe soon!
