EV Style: Would You/Do You Wear Overalls?

Here’s a question I’ve been pondering for the entire summer so far: What’s the deal with overalls? I saw them walking all over Europe, and now that I’m back in San Francisco, they seem to be the new hot number. Everyone, from moms to hipsters, college students to aimless wanderers, is wearing them. But here’s the thing: I simply cannot force myself to get behind the idea that overalls may be the next great fashion statement. Allow me to explain.

I grew up in the nineties, a simpler time when the lipstick was dark and the hair was a super-stylized, shoulder-length, über-recognizable coif. I wore overalls from age fives to eleven, and I wore all flavors and conceivable iterations: the shorterall, the skorterall, the overall-dress made from khaki; if you can dream it, I probably wore it. I was a total fashion plate back then (proof), so my foray into the wondrous world of overalls™ made a lot of sense. It was the era of gen x, and these lovely, half-shirt, half very, very baggy jeans were the bleeding edge in fashion. Everyone and their everyone was wearing overalls, likely sold by the gap (that picture is dynamite, by the way), and it seemed like the fun just couldn’t stop. Then, we turned the millennium and moved right on to other terrible fashion.

Until about two months ago, I thought overalls had gone the way of the poodle skirt – a laughable part of our shared past that we could bond over kind-of hating. But then, lo and behold, every hipster on the planet simultaneously decided that overalls were worth their weight in irony, and here we are. Even my fail-safe, go-to source of reliably amazing fashion (Madewell) has started selling overalls. I don’t know what to do with myself.

So tell me. Am I just being totally unreasonable? Have overalls become an indispensable facet of your wardrobe? Or are you with me in the disdain for trends that maybe should have stayed dead?

P.S. – Now that I’m back from my crazy, 7 week European adventure, get ready for some awesome changes and big things happening on the blog! Keep your eyes peeled, and follow me on twitter and instagram for updates!!

The first day of high school, I wore a pair of Tommy HIlfiger overhauls haha I will never forget. They were cool in the day, but now I would not wear them anymore. They do not look chic to me just like someone needs to work in the garden.

I’m totally with you! They were pretty awesome way back when, but not a great look in this day and age.

I’m so excited to see the new changes! But um, NO. I really don’t get the whole overalls look. I find them repulsive.

they’re coming along, slowly but surely! I’m basically recoding the whole site. The CSS will look very similar, with some key modifications. Dude, I’m so with you on the overalls thing. Yuck.
